In partnership with the Vision and Eye Research Institute, Anglia Ruskin University, we have trained primary healthcare volunteers in those villages to become “diabetes community champions” so that they are able to provide basic education and guidance on diabetes, including diabetes-related eye complications, the importance of attending diabetic eye check-ups, and to support people within their local communities, helping to promote long-term sustainability of the programme. To date, the programme has trained 71 health care volunteers and community champions.
